Ozempic Vision Loss (NAION)

If you or a loved one suffered sudden vision loss after taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus or another semaglutide medication, we urge you to contact our pharmaceutical liability attorneys by filling out our form or calling Peter Angelos Law at 410-649-2000. Research has linked semaglutide to a rare eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), and you may be entitled to pursue legal action.

What Is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a once-weekly injection made by Novo Nordisk to treat type 2 diabetes, and it is also widely prescribed for weight loss. Its active ingredient, semaglutide, is a GLP-1 receptor agonist also sold as Rybelsus and Wegovy.

What Is NAION?

NAION occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is reduced or blocked. It typically causes sudden, painless vision loss in one eye, often noticed upon waking. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, vision loss from a damaged optic nerve is usually permanent, and there is no proven treatment to restore it.

Is Ozempic Linked To Vision Loss?

Studies suggest a potential association. A 2024 observational study from Massachusetts Eye and Ear, published in JAMA Ophthalmology, found that patients prescribed semaglutide had a higher risk of NAION than patients on other medications: more than four times higher for people with type 2 diabetes and more than seven times higher for people who were overweight or obese. Because that study reviewed patient records from a single specialty hospital, it could not show that semaglutide caused NAION. Later research reviewed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology points to a smaller, roughly two-fold increase, some studies have found no increased risk, and causation has not been established.

In June 2025, the European Medicines Agency concluded that NAION is a very rare side effect of semaglutide, meaning it may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people taking the drug. The agency estimated roughly one additional case for every 10,000 years of patient treatment and recommended adding NAION to the drug’s European product information. U.S. labeling for Ozempic does not currently list NAION as a specific risk.

Is There An Ozempic Vision Loss Lawsuit?

Yes. In December 2025, federal lawsuits alleging that GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy, caused NAION were consolidated into MDL No. 3163 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Plaintiffs claim the manufacturers failed to warn patients and doctors about the risk.

Could You Have An Ozempic Vision Loss Claim?

Our attorneys are reviewing cases. Ask yourself:

  • Have you taken Ozempic, Wegovy or another semaglutide medication for type 2 diabetes or weight management?
  • Have you experienced sudden or unexplained vision loss, or been diagnosed with NAION?

Only a medical evaluation can confirm NAION. If your vision suddenly changes, see a doctor right away, and do not stop any prescribed medication without medical advice. Strict filing deadlines apply, so do not wait.
