Symptoms of Mesothelioma

The signs and symptoms of mesothelioma can vary depending on the type of mesothelioma a person has. As different forms of this disease affect different parts of the body, signs and symptoms will manifest in different ways. It should also be mentioned that latency – the time from first exposure to manifestation of the disease – is prolonged. This means that signs and symptoms may not be apparent until 20 to 50 years, or more, after exposure to asbestos.

Pleural mesothelioma, which is the most common form and affects the lungs, can cause signs and symptoms that may include:

  • Chest pain
  • Pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue or anemia
  • Wheezing, hoarseness, cough
  • Weight loss

In some cases, a person may develop tumor masses, including unusual lumps under the skin on the chest. A collapsed lung and spreading of the disease to other parts of the body can also occur.

Peritoneal mesothelioma signs and symptoms may include the following:

  • Abdominal pain and swelling
  • Ascites, or abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen
  • Problems with bowel function
  • Weight loss

Pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the tissue surrounding the heart, may cause difficulty breathing or chest pain.

If you or your loved one has experienced signs of symptoms that may indicate mesothelioma, speak with a medical professional. While these symptoms are not exclusive to this disease, anyone experiencing persistent signs or adverse effects should seek medical evaluation. Additionally, you should inform your doctor if you have been exposed to asbestos.
