Maryland Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Attorney
Information From Baltimore Social Security Lawyers
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program designed to provide financial assistance for aged, blind and disabled people who have little or no income. The SSI program disperses monthly payments in much the same way as the Social Security Disability program, which is also administered by the Social Security Administration. While both programs function to provide supplemental income and aid to disabled individuals, there are distinct differences between the programs’ eligibility requirements and benefits.
Who is eligible for SSI benefits?
Generally, Supplemental Security Income is available to individuals who have limited income and limited resources and are:
- Blind
- Disabled
- Age 65 or older
Eligible recipients must have low income and limited resources, or things that they own, worth no more than $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. The SSA states that the value of your home, car and other certain assets will not be counted toward your resources. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or nationals and must apply for any other programs for which they may be eligible, including pensions and SSD. Our Maryland personal injury attorneys can assist you in determining whether or not you are eligible to receive SSI benefits.
How SSI Benefits Work
SSI benefits will be calculated according to several personal circumstances, including your physical condition, your living arrangements and your monthly income. Monthly SSI benefits are capped according to yearly cost of living adjustments. For 2013, the maximum federal payment rate is $710/month for individuals and $1,066/month for couples. Benefit rates can also fluctuate depending on other circumstances and whether or not an individual has other sources of income.
