National Impact, Local Roots
Peter Angelos Law is a Baltimore institution, but Mr. Angelos’ passion for using the law to help injured people led him to take on some of the biggest litigation in U.S. history. Mr. Angelos and our firm represented Maryland in a lawsuit against tobacco company Philip Morris, helping secure a $4.5 billion settlement for those in the state who suffered chronic illness or the death of loved ones due to the company’s unethical advertising practices. He also helped lead nationwide litigation against the makers of dangerous diet drug fen-phen.
This high-profile work helped propel Peter Angelos Law into the national spotlight and made us in-demand litigators for people across the country who have been harmed by powerful corporations and industries. We take on that fight in all 50 states – and win. At the same time, we are proud of our legacy of decades of success representing the people of Baltimore, a legacy we carry on today in honor of Mr. Angelos, who passed away in March 2024.
Some Of The Largest Case Results In Maryland History
Perhaps our most famous case was as a part of the massive litigation against the U.S. tobacco companies in the 1990s. Our extensive litigation and negotiation efforts eventually produced a $4.5 billion settlement, which drew praise from the legal community nationwide. This case laid the foundation for our legacy of remarkable results, which includes:
- A jury verdict of $495 million against Exxon Mobile Corporation on behalf of about 400 individuals in Jacksonville, Florida, who were affected by a 2006 gas leak that spewed about 26,000 tons into the groundwater. The lawsuit exposed Exxon Mobile’s initial attempts to mislead authorities and the public about how the spill happened and the extend of the damage.
- A jury verdict of $28 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against two Baltimore hospitals after consulting gastroenterologists at those facilities both failed to take reasonable steps to diagnose a patient’s symptoms as the result of an ulcer in his intestine. Instead, both specialists claimed the patient’s severe abdominal pain was due to his previous diagnosis of Chron’s disease. As a result of these two misdiagnoses, our client was forced to undergo over a dozen surgeries and use a feeding tube.
- An approved settlement in which Constellation Energy Group agreed to pay our clients $54 million in compensation after a subsidiary of Constellation Energy allowed millions of tons of coal ash containing lead, mercury and other toxic or carcinogenic substances to contaminate the groundwater in Anne Arundel County, where many residents rely on wells for their water.
