Types of Cancer

Exposure to asbestos has also been linked to a number of cancers. Cancer – in any form – is often the most devastating consequence of asbestos exposure.

In addition to mesothelioma, the following forms of cancer have been associated with asbestos:

  • Asbestos-Related Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the second-most common form of cancer in the United States. Statistics published by the Environmental Working Group estimate that between 5,000 to 10,000 deaths occur each year in relation to asbestos-related lung cancer. Studies have also shown that cigarette smoking, in combination with asbestos exposure, greatly increases the likelihood of a person developing lung cancer.
  • Other Cancers
Other cancers that may be caused by exposure to asbestos are: colon, esophageal, pharyngeal, throat, head and neck.
