Updates on Attune Knee Replacement Lawsuits
Attune knee replacements, engineered by DuPuy, have been found to have high failure rates according to at least one study, which counteracts promises of safety and efficient healing by the manufacturers. Here, the product liability attorneys at The Law Offices of Peter Angelos have the most recent updates on the alleged loosening of hundreds of Attune implants.
Attune Knee Replacements Intended to Be Best on Market
The DuPuy Attune knee system was first made available in 2011 as a new and advanced total knee replacement implant. Attune knee replacement implants are made up of plastic and metal parts as well as DuPuy’s unique polyethylene formula, and surgery generally lasts around two hours. Designed for improved stability, natural movement and recovery time, Attune knee replacements were intended to be the most innovative knee replacement procedure on the market and supposedly allows patients to experience a greater range of motion and a quicker healing time than other implants.
Attune Knee Replacement Implants Associated with Loosening
Despite assertions that the DuPuy Attune knee system is the most cutting-edge knee replacement surgery available, hundreds of claims have been filed against DuPuy for tibial loosening, fractures of the device, fractures of surrounding bone and premature wear and tear of the implant. In a 2017 study, researchers found that Attune knee replacements had an “unusually high” failure rate, suggesting inefficiencies or defects in the implants.
Tibial loosening, which is when the implant connected to one of the lower leg bones becomes detached, can lead to dislocation, instability, pain and other complications. Researchers found that tibial loosening was due to the failure for the cement used during implantation to bond with the patient’s bone, and these complications require revision surgery in order to repair the damages.
Hundreds of Lawsuits Have Been Filed Against DuPuy
Since the 2017 study was published, researchers have found at least 230 additional reports to the FDA regarding tibial loosening. While no Attune knee replacement implants have been recalled, product liability lawyers filed their first reports in September 2017, and while litigation is still in its beginning stages, there are hundreds of potential lawsuits that can arise out of faulty implant reports and these lawsuits may eventually be combined in multidistrict litigation (MDL).
