Advocacy Group Seeks More Ford Recalls

A nonprofit auto safety group has requested that Ford CEO Jim Hackett sanction the recall of 1.35 million Explorer SUV’s due to continued complaints of exhaust fumes in the passenger compartments.

Recent Claims

The nonprofit advocacy group, known as The Center for Auto Safety, found 44 complaints regarding exhaust fumes made by owners taking their Exploders in for free repairs during a Ford customer service campaign.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating the problem, examining both law enforcement and civilian Explorer models released between 2011 and 2017. While, the NHTSA has yet to conclude their investigation, Ford insists that the line of vehicles is safe, citing the lack of recent complaints and that the free service has addressed the issue. Ford has stated that any Explorer owner who is not satisfied with the repairs should contact their local dealership for additional inspection.

What is Wrong?

Exhaust fumes and potential gases such as carbon monoxide fill the passenger compartments, putting the driver and passenger at risk of exposure to dangerous and harmful chemicals. The alleged issue stems from leaks in either the rear lift gaskets or drain valves of the vehicles. When such leaks are found during an inspection, the gaskets may be sealed or replaced. Mechanics may also reprogram the air conditioning unit to let in more fresh air.

Prior to October of last year, Ford had focused their efforts in fixing only law enforcement versions of the Explorer while maintaining the safety claim for civilian models. It was not until recent public scrutiny that Ford decided to expand their efforts to ensure the safety of civilian Explorers.

Previous Recalls

This is not the first time in 2018 in which Ford has faced public scrutiny or had to recall one of its best-selling vehicles. Earlier this year, Ford initiated a large-scale recall of nearly 350,000 F-150s and Expeditions due to the suspicion of defective transmission gears. Prior to this recall, Ford had also recalled an additional 1.5 million vehicles for a defective steering wheel, mainly impacting Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ models.
