Harley Davidson Recalls
Only months after recalling about 57,000 motorcycles due to a faulty oil line, Harley Davidson is recalling several hundred thousand more on account of a potential brake failure.
Initial reports regarding the defective brakes surfaced in July 2016. The National Highway Safety Administration began investigating potential problems with the brakes after receiving 43 complaints, including reports of three crashes and two injuries.
What is the issue with the brakes?
The brakes on Harley Davidson motorcycles are intended to decrease the chances and severity of an accident or collision. However, reports suggest that a module within Harley’s anti-lock brake system can corrode or fail without warning. And while typically with brake failure only the front or rear brakes will give out, in the case of this faulty module both brake systems failed.
Additionally, a failure to flush brake fluid in accordance with the factory recommended two-year maintenance schedule may result in a valve within the ABS hydraulic control unit becoming impaired by deposits. These deposits could lead to brake malfunctions, including failure.
How many motorcycles are affected by the recall?
Harley Davidson is recalling nearly 251,000 motorcycles worldwide, with nearly 175,000 of those bikes sold in the U.S. The voluntary recall covers CVO touring and VSRC bikes- model years 2008 through 2011- equipped with anti-lock brakes. The company has claimed that the recall would cost an estimated $29.4 million.
