Jury Awards $80 Million in Damages in Roundup Cancer Trial

On Behalf of | Apr 1, 2019 | Monsanto Roundup

A jury in San Francisco has awarded a California man $80 million in damages after he claimed that the herbicide Roundup played a significant role in the development of his cancer. Here, the product liability attorneys at The Law Offices of Peter Angelos discuss the most recent developments of the Roundup lawsuits.

The Jury’s Decision

Earlier this month, a jury sided with Sonoma County resident, 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman, whose attorneys argued that the glyphosate-based herbicide was a “substantial factor” in causing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Mr. Hardeman. Hardeman was diagnosed with the aggressive form of cancer in February 2015. According to the lawsuit, Hardeman had used Roundup on his 56-acre property for more than two decades.

The verdict is the second in the U.S. to find a connection between Roundup’s key ingredient, glyphosate, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In August, another San Francisco jury determined that the same herbicide had caused cancer in a former groundskeeper. The same panel also determined that Monsanto deliberately failed to adequately warn consumers and regulators about the product’s risks. Despite these guilty verdicts, Bayer, the company that recently purchased Roundup maker Monsanto, insists the product is safe and that it will appeal the verdict.

Roundup is the most commonly used herbicide in the world. Numerous researchers across the globe, including the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), have alleged that Roundup and other glyphosate-containing products are a probable human carcinogen that has the potential to cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after prolonged exposure.

If you or a loved one works or has worked in an industry where Roundup is regularly used, and have suffered from serious health concerns including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, contact the product liability attorneys today for a no-fee consultation.
