The Questionable Marketing Practices By JUUL Mirror Tactics Used By Tobacco Industry
JUUL, one of the most popular brands of e-cigarettes in the United States, has been the subject of recent litigation due to their advertising practices that cater to children and teenagers, much like the tactics formerly used by the tobacco industry. While the company claims that they are not deliberately targeting youths in their campaigns, and that their goal is to instead provide an alternative for adult smokers looking to quit tobacco, the company’s initial advertising campaigns were significantly youth-oriented, according to researchers with the Stanford Research Into the Impact of Tobacco Advertising. A significant amount of advertisements for JUUL feature teenagers and young adults, and the utilization of youth-oriented social media outlets such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook has potentially led to the increased use of JUULs by teenagers. A national survey conducted in 2018 found that vaping accounted for the largest year-to-year increase in substance use ever recorded in the United States for 10th and 12th grade students. In addition, from 2017 to 2018, use of e-cigarettes by high school students increased by almost 80%. Due to the exponential growth of e-cigarette use by youths, JUUL and other prominent vaping device companies have received increased attention from the FDA.
JUULs Contain a High Volume of Nicotine and May Promote Addiction Rather Than Mitigate It
Despite claims from JUUL that their products are intended to help smokers transition away from using tobacco, a 2017 study found that non-smokers were four times more likely to start smoking cigarettes after 18 months of vaping or “juuling.” JUULs contain higher volumes of nicotine, a highly addictive substance, compared to other brands of e-cigarettes. Specifically, the e-liquid found in JUULs is 5% nicotine, which is more than double the volume of nicotine found in similar e-cigarette brands. This alarming statistic demonstrates the growing concern surrounding e-cigarette use and addiction, in addition to the increased possibility of e-cigarette users transitioning to traditional cigarettes. The overall increased risk of addiction due to JUUL use is a prime concern, especially for the growing number of adolescents using JUULs.
The FDA Has Received Numerous Reports of Seizures After Use of Vaping Devices
The FDA has issued an FDA In Brief with the goal of obtaining public information about the potential link between vaping and seizures. It is already a documented issue that nicotine toxicity can lead to serious seizures and convulsions, and these side effects can also occur with swallowing e-cigarette liquid. However, the FDA is now monitoring the potential link between seizures and vaping after several voluntary reports were documented concerning young adults experiencing seizures after vaping. The FDA will continue the investigation into this potential health and safety issue and encourages the public to file a report if they know someone who experienced a seizure after using a vaping device.
While the FDA does not have substantial evidence to determine a concrete link between vaping and seizures, they are currently working towards establishing a possible link. You can view the full FDA In Brief here.
