What is Belviq?
Belviq, also known as lorcaserin, is a weight-loss drug that affects the signals in the brain that control appetite. Generally, this medication is used to treat obesity along with a change in diet in exercise in the consumers it is prescribed to. Belviq is strictly used to control appetite and does not work to control any other underlying health condition. Originally approved in 2012 by the FDA, the drug manufacturer was required to conduct a clinical trial evaluating potential cardiovascular problems. However, after this clinical trial was completed, an increased risk of cancer, specifically pancreatic, colorectal and lung cancer. 7.7% of patients who took Belviq were diagnosed with cancer, compared to 7.1% in a comparison given dummy pills.
Warning Issued for Patients and Healthcare Professionals
After the FDA sent their request to Eisai Inc., a warning was issued about the potential risks associated with both Belviq and Belviq XR. In this warning, the FDA asks that professionals evaluate the potential risks and benefits of prescribing Belviq to their patients, and understand the increased likelihood of cancer diagnosis. Additionally, the FDA has been advising patients who are already in possession of Belviq or Belviq XR tablets to dispose of them safely, such as a designated drug take-back location. While the FDA is not asking that healthcare professionals issue additional screenings for cancer, it is vital for both the doctor and patient to monitor any adverse effects of Belviq and consider alternative methods for weight loss.
