HealthPlus Surgery Center Lawsuits
A class action lawsuit has been filed by patients of a New Jersey surgical center, alleging that lapses in infection controls by the center put thousands of patients at risk of contracting infectious diseases.
Thousands of patients who were treated by HealthPlus Surgery Center in Saddle Brook, New Jersey are being urged to have their blood tested for dangerous infections including HIV and Hepatitis. According to a letter issued by HealthPlus, the patients—who visited the center between January and September of 2018—may have been exposed to blood-borne pathogens like HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. In the letter, HealthPlus attributed the potential exposure to “lapses in infection control in sterilization/cleaning instruments and the injection of medications."
An investigation by the New Jersey Department of Health found that employees at the Saddle Brook HealthPlus Surgery Center were not following sterilization procedures, and medical instruments were not properly cleaned. State investigators have also suggested that the center used poor drug storage methods, an outdated control plan and unacceptable sterilization practices. In one instance, an inspector allegedly reported that a blood-stained sheet left on a stretcher in a hallway was not properly disposed of, even after reporting the procedure violation to staff.
HealthPlus says that of the 186 patients tested so far, one has tested positive for chronic hepatitis. However, state health officials have recommended that anyone who had a procedure performed at the center between January 1, 2018 and September 7, 2018, be tested.
