Thimerosol is an organic compound that contains mercury, a toxic compound that can result in serious health problems. Thimerosol has been used since the 1930s as a preservative in a number of drugs, including many vaccines, to help prevent dangerous contamination from harmful microbes. However, because of the growing concern about Thimerosol and its effects, pediatric vaccines manufactured for the market in United States today no longer contain this substance or, if they do, it's in trace amounts accepted by the FDA and other health organizations.
Health problems and mercury
Mercury toxicity has been linked to a variety of different diseases, including autism and learning disabilities. In addition, mercury has been linked to Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, arthritis, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression and bipolar disorder. Because mercury can act as a poison, toxic exposure levels can cause developmental defects in fetuses, as well as affect the kidney and nervous system in children and adults.
