Ford Recalls 350,000 F-150s and Expeditions for Faulty Transmission Gears

In what appears to be a worrying trend for Ford in 2018, the company has yet again initiated a large-scale recall of its vehicles. The recall affects nearly 350,000 vehicles which, according to reports, may have defective transmission gears. This defect could result in the vehicle moving after the driver has placed it in park and removed the keys.

The issue with the defective transmission gears was brought to light following an accident and injury related to the faulty parts. The current safety recall affects both Ford F-150 and Expedition models manufactured in 2017 and 2018.

What is the issue with the transmission?

Both the F-150 and Expedition models are designed with a clip intended to lock the gear shift cable to the transmission. However, in the affected vehicles, the clip allegedly loosely fits in the mechanism that locks it to the transmission, allowing the vehicle to shift gears without manual intent from the driver.

Additionally, the warning light or alarm–which typically alerts a driver that the vehicle is not in park upon exiting the vehicle—may fail to work. This enables the vehicle to roll away after the driver has exited, if the emergency brake is not engaged.

Ford has confirmed they are aware of at least one accident and one injury related to this issue. The automobile manufacturer has stated that dealers will inspect the recalled vehicles and make necessary repairs at no cost to the driver.

How many vehicles are affected by the recall?

Of the nearly 350,000 vehicles that Ford Motors is recalling, 292,909 are in the United States, 51,742 in Canada and 2,774 in Mexico. The recall applies to some 2018 Ford F-150 trucks and 2018 Expedition SUV’s with a 10-speed automatic transmission, in addition to 2018 Ford F-650 and F-750 vehicles with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Ford’s reference number for the recall is 18S10.
