In November of 2000, the FDA issued a public health advisory warning people not to take over-the-counter medications containing PPA (phenylpropanolamine) or Ephedra, an herbal additive. This advisory was based on findings from a study done by the Yale University School of Medicine, which showed a direct link between PPA, Ephedra, and hemorrhagic stroke, or bleeding of the brain. The risk of stroke was found to be especially high in women.
